Moving Your Jewelry
A piercing can be healed without ever moving the jewelry. It is a common misconception that jewelry must be turned to make sure that it does not get stuck in your body. The jewelry you are healing with is not an organic material. It can not become permanently stuck. Over time your piercing will loosen up and jewelry will move freely. Do not move your jewelry in a new piercing as this is the equivalent of picking a scab. It will lenghten your healing period, cause irritation, and increase the risk of introducing bacteria to the piercing.
Infection Control
The risk of getting an infection is minimal with any new piercing as long as you think before you act. Most of the time, people believe they have an infection when they are actually experiencing extreme irritation due to neglect or improper aftercare techniques. Keep your hands off your piercing. Do not let others touch your piercing. Restrain from rough sexual behavior during the healing period. Avoid large bodies of water while healing. Wear clothing that is comfortable and will not irritate your piercing. Your new piercing is a gateway into your body. Practice good habits and you shouldn’t have any problems. If you think that you are having a problem, do not remove the jewelry. Come by and let us advise you on what course of action to take.
Salt Water Soaks
Soaking your piercing twice a day is recommended for the duration of the healing period. Mix 1/4 teaspoon sea salt with 8 ounces distilled water in a cup. The water should be warm but not hot enough to hurt yourself.
Completely submerge the piercing in the saline solution for 5 to 10 minutes. This causes your body to naturally flush out any lymph fluid that may be dried to the jewelry along with any bacteria that may be trapped in the piercing. Make sure to rinse off any discharge after soaking.
Soap
Soap should be used to clean your piercing no more than twice a day. We recommend to just use soap in the shower as this helps to rinse off any excess residue that can build up on the jewelry. Place a little bit of soap on your fingertips, gently massage around the piercing, and rinse well. You do not need to move the jewelry. Using a basic anti-microbial soap such as Provon or Satin is generally comfortable. If you need something a little more gentle, Dr. Bronner’s or Nature’s Gate will suffice.
There are no stupid questions regarding your health. If you think that you may need attention, once again: do not remove the jewelry. This can cause problems for you. Call us or stop by for us to take a look.
